Dear Frank Dallas Red Carpet screening & Movie Review by Ali

Dear Frank felt more like...Ohhhh Nooo Frank....
With  Brian White, Claudia Jordan, Columbus Short, Kearia Schroeder, Fella Soul, Joey Napoli, Nicholas Turturro....
*Release Date Nov 10, 2019

Dallas, TX welcomed the 30 city tour premiere charity screening of Dear Frank on 10/18 at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters where proceeds will fund youth arts and education programs at TBAAL. Special thanks to Mudd Films & Webber Films.
Actors Brian White, Claudia Jordan, Kearia Schroeder, Fella Soul were present at the screening and took time to chat about their endeavors and this tour. They also held a QA along with an after party and listening session after the screening at J.F.Keg Bar & Kitchen. What  a night!!

So I bet you're wondering what the hype is about??
Well.... Let me tell you!
This is story about a lovely couple, who keep daily diaries and have the perfect life or so it seems.. Until an untimely death makes everyone question who they are, and what they thought they knew about one another.
How often are you watching a movie and one minute you love everybody, the next minute, you hate everybody, you have no idea what's about to happen?? You think you know and BAM!! They get you again!
Had me saying WTW over and over!!
You got evil, you've got mischief, you've got faux families, lies and sex.. Well tons of sex, murder, comedy... More lies...Not the Priest and the Doctor...AND an unexpected ending!
Y'all don't leave your diary around!!!!!

The storyline is real. While the content was heavy, it really makes you sit back and think for a minute.. The way comedic lines were written and enacted was so intelligently done that you could still capture the essence of the film without there being inappropriate humor based on the real life heavy topics.
I applaud the writers and actors for tackling really tough issues. Mental health, Sexual addiction,  Abuse, Depression, as well as hitting on kind of the decline of the mind when there is no accountability and fear, hatred and anger take over.
Each actor did a phenomenal job portraying their character in this type of film with only 10 days of shooting and 65 pages of script and it's an independent film.
Go out support THIS FILM & actors and the 30 city tour..
They may be coming to a city near you. Check @dearfrank.movie for details

I can't wait to see what each of these stars has for us next!!!

John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum Movie Review by Ali

The 3rd John Wick... If you are a fan of all the action and the character Keanu plays.... I will let the cat out of the bag.. You will not be disappointed.

Keanu showed out and I found out he still does 90% of his own stunts.  Even as he is priming he moves pretty well.

Halle Berry aka Sofia kicks major booty. She handles the guns and the dogs like a pro. I just want to know... would you drink the water from the water bottle? eeeek
Hail Halle!!

Let me tell you who else kicks butt!!!
The Doc who assists John is a straight trooper.  I was like yep...nope... haha. To avoid death.. he almost died. You gotta go see to understand what I'm talking about.
THEN... there were the Horses and the Dogs.  YO!!  first off I was like they better not hurt any animals. I am so not a fan of animals dying in films especially how horses fall etc... Ok I digress.  Anyway.. if you didn't like horses and dogs.. OHHHH you are gonna love 'em after this.

There were hoops and hollers, screams and DA-DAngs all through out the theater and movie.

It was an interesting story.  If you have seen the previous 2, there is some tie in. Keanu aka John kills an important person of the High Table and now he has a bounty on his life.  and not just any bounty... it started at $14mil.  Ok... IM in.. haha
There were rotary phones, tons of tats and piercings in the office that looked like it was placed in the 50s and everyone had those weird push up phones..  The ones you know are only used as throw aways and for assassinations.  The Adjudicator played by Asia Kate Dillon was a trip.  I give her credit.. she was so unbothered.  And Zero played by Mark Dacascos was super funny and a skilled fighter.

There was a lot happening and I was rooting for John and Charon. I wasn't sure how I felt about Lawrence Fishburnes altercation with the Adjudicator

I will say it is about 15-20 mins too long. But the fights were Great, the gun and animal scenes amazing and you get a chance to learn some great assassin vocabulary.

So what happens to John Wick?  Is it over?

Godzilla: King of the Monsters Movie Review by Ali

Alright ya'll so I grew up on Godzilla, which was first aired in 1954, but it has been in my house since I was young and I admit it has been a minute since I partook in a Godzilla movie.

I don't know where to start.
I saw the movie on 5/30/2019 in Real 3D and it was CG heavy, action and destruction packed!!!
To say in the least.
Almost too much.
This story was about Godzilla reclaiming his KINGship over the other beasts.  There was a spider, the 3 headed dragon , the eagle, the moth etc....
I lost count.  Godzilla is the expected hero.  He is to be the humans savior.  Ultimately he has to fight the 3 headed dragon creature King Ghidorah or possibly watch all of humanity become extinct.
The human story was less than exciting and was barely tolerable in terms of the acting.
But the humans are of course the orchestrates of this mayhem. They thought they could control the rising of each creature and bring balance.
Well, I don't know if they were successful.

You see the family breakdown and unity, the tragedy that causes the separation and who wants to be the savior, make up for all the wrongs...

If you love Godzilla, the beast fights, I dont think you will be disappointed not one bit.
For me, I actually like to be able to see what I am looking at and if it's CG I want to see the definition and clarity.   I want to see who or what is fighting or throwing out fire or electric beams.

It was a lot of nothing it seemed like to me.  They could have left out a lot of the family dynamics, but I get it.  Brighten up the film and let me see who is fighting.  I kind of like a little bit more than a lot of rubble crumbling to the ground.

Anyway, a little over 120mins, I say check it out if you are already a fan.  If not, you might be good waiting for the dvd. Just saying...

If Beale Street Could Talk Review by Ali

A story about love and life and family and the mishaps of racism.... by James Baldwin.

Who wouldn't want a budding relationship that is based on the foundation of true friendship? Well that is exactly what Fonny (Stephen James) and Tish Rivers (Kiki Layne) had.

Friends since they were small children who grew up to be better, inseparable friends which turned into romantic love.
But..... of course you know it's not gonna be pretty.  The plot thickens.  But before it gets deep thick we get to witness Sharon Rivers (Regina King), Tish's mother come to life in yet another dynamic role that she kills.  She's not just a Mom and a wife, and provider, nudger, comforter, and she also is the backbone for her daughter as she embarks on this journey that she really has no idea about.
In every relationship there are 2 families and yep one is happy and the other is bitter..  I just want to know what ya'll would have said to Fonny's Mom and sisters.  Oohhh child, cuz, let me just say....

This back and forth story is about love, really, the main character, Fonny gets arrested and accused of a crime he did NOT commit... Go figure... We get to see, in a very clever way, how things like that tend to happen over and over and over.  I thought that part of the story is so crucial in the climate we are in today.
There's a baby involved, a women in Puerto Rico, 2 fathers coming together, a malicious cop and our judicial system....
and you end up with 2 families who fight for a young, innocent, black man, by any means necessary, in this country and in another country to bring necessary justice.

Did it work?  Was Fonny exonerated and released?  I won's spoil it for you...You have to go see for yourself.

The intimate pace of the film directed by Barry Jenkins leaves you immersed in every feeling and emotion, thought and.... eye color of each actor.  Last part was an inside joke.  You gotta go see it to understand.  Then post a comment when you get it.

Creed II Movie Review by Ali

Flying high now....
Knockout or NOT??
Rocky is back! but now through the eyes of another generation... Sounds cliche'.
But Who doesnt love a Rocky film?
I feel like me and Sylvester go way back..  Yes we are on first name basis..  He just doesn't know it..
Anyway check this out..
Did you see the first Creed?
I did and loved it..
Check out Bianca and the privileged Adonis (A name I love.. god of Beauty.. Doesn't quite fit this guys persona..but hey it works).

Ok back to Adonis... So he's noble and independent and strong and determined nd let's not forget stubborn....and he wants to follow in his fathers footsteps..   Without really following..
What's wrong with wanting to make your own way... I can respect that...
You know most sequels that turn into potential threequels..  Most always make the second one about with that love and family interest and they get sappy...  But this on had that girth 
Yep..  They got that..  Bianca is rocking with Adonis ie. D and let me tell y'all they are super cute in the movie..  And maybe even for real from what i can see in real life..  What's the deal Michael B Jordan and Tessa..??? And the way she sang that song..gave me life life...
Then of course you've got
Rocky and his son #astranged...
Drago and Victor #toomuchpressure
Adonis and the ideal of Apollo #whosnameisit
So yeah...it's a smathering of Father son cliches,  morals,  family values etc...
But I LOVED every bit of it..
Y'all just go see it ok?
I can't wait for the next one
.
I hear Rocky is hanging up his hat..  A reign well done..
There can never be another Rocky!! The soundtrack will forever be engrained in my head...
Hail Sylvester Stallone..
Rocky and now Creed...

Elf The Musical Review by Ali

It's the Story of Buddy the Elf..... the story of Buddyyyyyyyyyyy the Elf..... cute little number...

Do you want to feel good, jingle bell ringing, dancing in the streets and some singing...?
WEll then you need a holiday musical...
Elf is it especially if you are feeling grinchy this holiday season. And NO, it is not a remake of the Movie Elf with Will Ferrell, or so I was told. And I cant say if that is good or bad, because …… I never saw Elf the movie.... I know shocking right?

Maybe you don't believe in fairytales or Santa, who by the way is quite humorous and clever and hip to new technology. He no longer uses Reindeer to power his sled!!!
Who knew.... This new age stuff is throwing me off. The writers Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin were quite creative...they decided why not power the sled with feelings and with the belief in the Holiday and Santa?
Well there should be more than enough of that good stuff right? How fitting the setting is in NYC.. the imagery of a bustling, non caring, sharp tongue, impatient place like NY definitely would need some help conjuring up that holiday spirit... and Buddy would soon find out.

Buddy, The Elf,. played by Eric Williams has a life story all his own. It's clear, he is not one of Santa's elves, but he lives on the North Pole with Santa, Ms. Claus and the other elves..
So where was he from and how did he end up in the North Pole?
An inquisitive guy he is as well..... rather clumsy too.. So when he hears other elves talking about him and saying he didn't belong it was no surprise he wanted to find his own way...
Where will his journey take him?

Get ready for some interesting yet typical family, societal and work dynamics...with a TWIST!!.

Life lessons are learned, hearts and minds are changed and you will be singing and bopping your head to this one.
Kudos to all the performers and extra kudos to Michael Hobbs played by Grady Miranda.. He has an amazing voice for a young kid.
If you are a fan of musicals and want to lift your spirits I say check out Elf the musical...
 I give it a Ali-PEACHY

Revival The Movie Review by Ali

Is a theatrical musical, and a movie dramatization of Jesus Christ crucifixion and resurrection as told in the book of John (yep New Testatment). Yep literally a movie and musical all in one...

The writer took points from the Bible and infused it with new modern logic and reasoning, fear and doubt...
The movie was filled with a host of special artists with different talents..
It was interesting, to watch the story unfold and see flecks of the old Testament and new Testament intertwined.
Obviously, this is a big religion film about faith and belief or lack there of of Jesus Christ.
How do we view him and the lessons that we've been taught today, as compared to how they were viewed and how it was taught to us from the Bible in older days or as we were growing up?

There were some looming questions for me from the film...
Do we still believe the way we were taught,
and if we do believe the way, we were taught WHY, do we still believe..?
Is faith... Still blind faith?
Are we wicked if we need to see it to believe it...
I mean even Heinz says seeing is believing right??? (little attempt at humor)

Can you be a free thinker and still believe in Christ...?

All in all it was an interesting way to share the story..a bit long.. And It is a bit confusing in the beginning,  but somewhat intriguing to figure out where the movie will go.

It's a religious believers feel good movie and you get to see a lot of stars..
and the FLIP...
It's a non religious persons piece of work promoting more in depth discussions around what and why we believe.
Sooooooo…...
I give it an Ali Peachy

Green Book Movie Review by Ali

Not another race movie.... is it?
This is a story taken from the plagued memories of the early 1960's when race was very heightened in the US.  Where race division was not a surprise but a normality.  Where the lines were not as blurred....as they are today..
Mahershala Ali as Dr. Shirley a cultured, prestigious black piano player and Viggo Mortenson as Tony Lip, low to middle class Italian bouncer from the streets in the Bronx.  An unlikely pair who tackle the strains of race differences that.... are actually the same.

They embark on a journey, neither expected with slight role reversals from what we are used to seeing on the big screen.  The film uncovers historical factoids most of the world will either never experience or possibly hear about.  The inclusion of the infamous Green Book was introduced at such a pivotal time, in my opinion, well with all that is going on in the States.
What a way to shed light on an era that took over where slavery supposedly left off and equality was supposed to be assumed in it's stead... Right!... Oh did I mutter that...
The Green Book was an actual guide book for blacks or anyone traveling with blacks to follow in the deep south.  What Hotels they could stay in, restaurants to eat in, city curfews etc....  It was critical to adhere to these rules or suffer the consequences.
The trip they take is an entanglement of emotions, compromise, laughter, survival, prejudices, family, humiliation, truths, lies and friendship.

I did find it interesting how they chose to interject sexuality into the film.. Watch and share your thoughts?

Anyway... The film was a myriad of emotions for me as a black person sitting in a mixed theater, wondering what others take was, what lit a fire or didn't... and would any deep discussions, enlightenment and positive change follow.  I hope so.

One of my favorite quotes - "It Takes courage to change peoples hearts.."

Kevin Hart & Tiffany Haddish in Night School Movie Review by Ali

Ya'll can I say Stone Cold Blast!!!
What can you say when you've got a combination like Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish in one movie at the same time!! and Directed by Malcolm D. Lee!
It's an ACE!

Big shout out to Kevin Hart for the Pre Pre Screening in Dallas Texas on 9/11.  And huge Kudos to  Kevin for making an appearance at the screening and sharing with the audience what this film meant to him on an educational level as well as marking ANOTHER first for this Comedian/Actor.  That's right Night School is the first film produced under his own Production company Hartbeat Productions!!
(applause applause)
Cool thing they did was post up about 8 huge, bigger than life posters, around Dallas and if you found them, you got VIP seating for the show.  Now how cool is that.  So if you saw those bbig yellow posters this prescreening was it..
On top of that Kevin made appearances all around Dallas, Tx including some of the local high schools.  What a real treat for the Kiddos!

So now on the movie.
Now we have all seen comedies and liked them.. Right Right..... Well this one here hit it on so many cylinders.  It was super funny, but tack on all the LIFE elements and situations and personalities and stereotypes.. (wipes brow)  I tell you they killed it.

Many people like to go to a film and not get hit with cultural and social awareness messages.  But this hits EVERYONES home in some fashion. Every character played a role we can relate to or we know someone who can.
From the loud mouth bad kid in school, to the super smart sibling, to the unforgiving parents, wanna be drop outs, immigrants and young parents, snippy take no stuff teachers and EGO driven, half witted adults... (Wow!! that's a lot) You get a story that while some scenes were silly ridiculous, it was not so farfetched.

This comedy was well thought out, funny and an eye opener about how we view people, how we treat people, honesty, trust, values etc....

I think it is a win win and a good one to see if you have that teen or are that adult who may be thinking about taking the easy road.
Don't Quit and Don't Doubt yourself!!!

Kevin Hart's Night School Opens NationWide on 9/28/18.
Get your ticket and support!!
