Green Book Movie Review by Ali
Not another race movie.... is it?
They embark on a journey, neither expected with slight role reversals from what we are used to seeing on the big screen. The film uncovers historical factoids most of the world will either never experience or possibly hear about. The inclusion of the infamous Green Book was introduced at such a pivotal time, in my opinion, well with all that is going on in the States.
This is a story taken from the plagued memories of the early 1960's when race was very heightened in the US. Where race division was not a surprise but a normality. Where the lines were not as blurred....as they are today..
Mahershala Ali as Dr. Shirley a cultured, prestigious black piano player and Viggo Mortenson as Tony Lip, low to middle class Italian bouncer from the streets in the Bronx. An unlikely pair who tackle the strains of race differences that.... are actually the same.

What a way to shed light on an era that took over where slavery supposedly left off and equality was supposed to be assumed in it's stead... Right!... Oh did I mutter that...
The Green Book was an actual guide book for blacks or anyone traveling with blacks to follow in the deep south. What Hotels they could stay in, restaurants to eat in, city curfews etc.... It was critical to adhere to these rules or suffer the consequences.
The trip they take is an entanglement of emotions, compromise, laughter, survival, prejudices, family, humiliation, truths, lies and friendship.
I did find it interesting how they chose to interject sexuality into the film.. Watch and share your thoughts?
Anyway... The film was a myriad of emotions for me as a black person sitting in a mixed theater, wondering what others take was, what lit a fire or didn't... and would any deep discussions, enlightenment and positive change follow. I hope so.

Kevin Hart & Tiffany Haddish in Night School Movie Review by Ali
Ya'll can I say Stone Cold Blast!!!
What can you say when you've got a combination like Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish in one movie at the same time!! and Directed by Malcolm D. Lee!
It's an ACE!
Big shout out to Kevin Hart for the Pre Pre Screening in Dallas Texas on 9/11. And huge Kudos to Kevin for making an appearance at the screening and sharing with the audience what this film meant to him on an educational level as well as marking ANOTHER first for this Comedian/Actor. That's right Night School is the first film produced under his own Production company Hartbeat Productions!!

Cool thing they did was post up about 8 huge, bigger than life posters, around Dallas and if you found them, you got VIP seating for the show. Now how cool is that. So if you saw those bbig yellow posters this prescreening was it..
On top of that Kevin made appearances all around Dallas, Tx including some of the local high schools. What a real treat for the Kiddos!
So now on the movie.
Now we have all seen comedies and liked them.. Right Right..... Well this one here hit it on so many cylinders. It was super funny, but tack on all the LIFE elements and situations and personalities and stereotypes.. (wipes brow) I tell you they killed it.
Many people like to go to a film and not get hit with cultural and social awareness messages. But this hits EVERYONES home in some fashion. Every character played a role we can relate to or we know someone who can.
From the loud mouth bad kid in school, to the super smart sibling, to the unforgiving parents, wanna be drop outs, immigrants and young parents, snippy take no stuff teachers and EGO driven, half witted adults... (Wow!! that's a lot) You get a story that while some scenes were silly ridiculous, it was not so farfetched.
This comedy was well thought out, funny and an eye opener about how we view people, how we treat people, honesty, trust, values etc....
I think it is a win win and a good one to see if you have that teen or are that adult who may be thinking about taking the easy road.
Don't Quit and Don't Doubt yourself!!!

Fort Worth Indie Showcase 2018
The Fort Worh Indie Film Showcase was another HUGE success. Year 5 goes down in the books with a bang and next year is already under way!
200 films 3 days all in Fort Worth at the Norris Conference Center, which wasa great location.
Awesome job to Bill Hass and the board for the exceptional work this year. Selecting the films,bringing in filmmakers, organizing an event of this magnitude was refresingto see.

At my first “INSERT NAME”, in its 5 th year, I was able to spend an afternoon experiencing artistic
creations of writers, directors, and actors expressed via motion picture.
There were over 200 films shown over the three-day festival and one block of short films stood out to
me. Each film was approximately 8 – 12 minutes long and depicted stories of the complex and unmet
needs of American Veterans and their friends and family. Each story touched on the issues too many of
our veterans and their loved ones struggle to confront and overcome - PTSD, grieving and coping with
the loss of a fallen soldier, and transition to civilian life. These films did not shy away from these issues
and it made the viewers, at least it did for me, ask oneself, what can I do to help.
As each film had a unique story arc, the film entitled, Brother, took a murder mystery approach to tell
the story of how loved ones deal with the loss of a fallen soldier. It began with an FBI investigation
centered around the murder of Iraqi citizens by an American battalion stationed in Iraq. These American
solders were accused of a “revenge murder” after a member of their battalion, their brother, was
murdered by an improvised explosive device (IED).
FBI agents enters the home of a member of that battalion to question him about the events that took
place in Iraq. As the soldier articulates the life of a soldier and the bonds of brotherhood, he finds ways
to insinuate one of the FBI agents, a non-military man, doesn’t have the experience to understand
where he is coming from, thus directing his responses to the second FBI agent, a woman war veteran. As
the soldier makes a case for the rules of justice can not be applied the same in all situations, the FBI
agents argue justice should be is equal and fair. At the end of this exchange, I am sure the audience
joined me in asking the question, is justice equal and fair?
The storyline resumes when the female FBI agent meets the soldier at a restaurant where their
conversation is acknowledged to be off-the-record. The first plot twist comes in as the FBI agent reveals
the American solder killed by the IED is her brother. This builds on the bond established in the first
scene, both are war veterans, allowing the soldier to open up about the motives and events resulting
from the death of his fellow soldier and her brother. This scene walks you through how ugly war can be
and the mindset of soldiers who experience war. As this scene fades, I began to wonder who I side with,
FBI agents or the soldier. I assume many of my fellow onlookers were grappling with the same dilemma.
The next scene opens with the female FBI agent laying in bed discussing the case with someone, a male
who is off scene. The male enters the scene, and to my surprise it is her partner. As I am trying to wrap
my head around this romantic relationship, the female agent picks up her phone and the screen has a
voice recording of her off-the-record conversation with the soldier. As her partner is convinced the
soldier is guilty of revenge murder, she is holding the phone, in moral conflict, deciding whether to press
play or delete. I already divulged enough of the short film so I won’t spoil the ending, but this film
masterfully took its viewers on a journey through the mindset of soldiers while in combat, to the often
difficult transition of reintegrating into civilian life while coping with he lost of a fallen soldier, in only a
matter of minutes.
The writer, director, and actors did a great job of character develop and getting a message across and I
will tell you, it was well received.

My Circle....
This morning...I was looking at stuff on the web etc..., reflecting on my life, my dreams and ALL my Failures, and thought about how much we could do if we worked together...
I Learned to just do it/Get it done when I was growing up so that left no room for being patient. For allowing others to stand in their truth (good or bad) and be accountable or create a space to nurture them for their own growth. That mindset didnt allow for naturally relying on people and selecting the proper companions..(made me think of failed relationships and missed accomplishments etc.....what it taught was dont wait on anyone ..do it all yourself...
The End result was the only goal..
But in reality.. we cant do it all ourselves.. eventually we need a team... a circle...
I see quite a bit of shadieness in this place called 'friends or circles' sooo I decided to put my definition into words...

What does Circle mean to me..
My circle... by my basic definition...
A circle of not only like minds & concepts.. but with different approaches, Beliefs are not identical but goals are..
A circle that accepts & nurtures what the others bring to the table
A circle that truly respects and does not heinously use or disparage one another
A circle that collaborates, communicates & holds one another accountable to build..power comes in numbers not silo solos..
A circle that appreciates one another
A circle that is dedicated to shining light on one another for the world to see
A circle that not only talks..but executes
A circle that understands if this is built right...there is no END Result..because the legacy we build goes on and on..
(*hits the surface)
When did we lose this concept...or did we ever truly have it and understand it..??
Maybe that's why it is harder to attain....

WAYO Kings and Queens Servant Fundraiser Gala of Galas!!!
Giving is the most beautiful thing in the world and WAYO - Where Are You Outreach gave a tremendous honor to the Honoree Servants of the People for their ongoing contributions in the streets of Dallas.
The Fundraising Gala was set up for nothing less than royalty including a great meal and silent auction. Letitia Owen's Founder of WAYO along with a host of others including Michael Hollywood Hernandez, Duche' Bradley, Tracy Elliott, Danyel Sirrency Jones, Toni Estes, Alanna Sarabia, Cheryl Roseborough, Hollie Youngblood, & Nikki Chu presented the awards. The night wasn't over.. Letitia Owen's and Chris Traylor were the entertainers for the evening and the sang sang!!

The event was beautiful and ALL for a great cause to fund a new facility for WAYO to continue their amazing and truly important services (including feeding the homeless, and providing social services in the the Dallas communities.)

2018 Open Hearts and Minds Awards....What an INCREDIBLE Night!
Big Thought and SMG (Studio Movie Grill) made it a grand affair to honor a staple in the community.
The Orange carpet was blazing along with the good ole Texas heat for this one and the key contributors for this event were a pleasure.

honoree of this prestigious award, Founder of Creative Solutions and a part of Big Thought, a youth development organization offering social emotional learning to adults and children in disenfranchised areas of the city Dallas for over 30 years.
CEO Byron Sanders..native of Dallas reflects on his childhood life and why this program is so beneficial. "I was always in something... track, football, theater, Odessey of the Mind. It became my life line. I had the inate belief. because of how she raised me...that tomorrow could be better than today...and acting upon it can make it so...and that is the essence of Hope. Big Thought.....That is what our partnerships in the community helpc create"....

It was a great night ending with an SMG screening of Incredibles 2 which ironically was about Mrs. Incredible shining in a world where she plays second to Mr. Incredible. She was given an opportunity to shine and she did just that.. Much like Lisa Schmidt has shown for over 20 years. Bridging gaps and helping create a brighter future for our youth in a fun and educational way.
